CS4's new Blob Brush is sort of the inverse of the Eraser.

In CS3, I liked the ability of Illustrator's Eraser tool to wipe through vectors as if they were pixels, invisibly doing the math to adjust the paths on the fly. It's great that the essential ability to add transparency to gradients has at last come to Illustrator. But there's also an excellent gradient control bar that appears right on top of the gradient in the document, giving a hands-on feel to your adjustments. Just as in Photoshop CS4, you can click and add color stops to a gradient in the Gradient palette, specifying an opacity percentage for each stop you create. The Photoshop-style interface for handling transparency makes for a seamless transition from one app to the other. I also really like the implementation of another long-awaited newcomer: a feature that lets you add transparency into Illustrator's gradients. The multiple-artboard feature goes a long way toward satisfying the many who have been waiting for something like multipage support, and it's a much better solution than some sort of 'pages panel' would be. You can export each board as an individual file or all of them in one multipage PDF document. Simply drag the Artboard tool into the workspace and a new artboard appears in the document, which can have up to 100 boards of varying sizes. The biggest overdue feature in the new Illustrator is the multiple-artboard capability, which lets you easily work on numerous related documents within a single file, sharing assets and settings freely. Overall, this is still the best vector graphics application out there-it just didn't improve this year as much as I'd expected, and not quite as much as I'd hope for the $600 price tag (or the $200 upgrade). And there are a couple of new ones that might make this version a draw-not because these features are 'unimaginable,' but because users have been waiting for them for years. Don't get me wrong: I tested under Microsoft Windows Vista and Macintosh OS X Leopard, and I did find that many existing features had been polished, enhanced, and made easier to find. Illustrator CS4 is here (as a standalone app for $599 direct or as part of all CS4 suites except Web Standard) and it lacks the sort of killer addition that made Photoshop CS4 a five-star app. In my review of Adobe Illustrator CS3 last year, I wrote that I expected the next version 'to knock our collective socks off with some unimaginable new feature.' Well, my career as a prognosticator is finished.
